kid size travel pillows with carrying case and velcro pocket

We recently drove 14 hours each style to spend a few weeks visiting family. My kids insist on bringing their pillows forth on every long car trip we take. They Demand them, they say, to become comfortable while they're reading books or watching movies on the ride. I can understand, only we really don't accept room in the very full mini van for four pillows. The pillows invariably stop up squished on the floor of the van (which is always covered in crumbs past the time we've been on the road an 60 minutes or two) and then stepped on for the remainder of the bulldoze. I decided we needed a better solution.

And so, I whipped up a travel pillow for each child. I cut an old pillow into four pieces and sewed upwards the open up sides to make iv mini pillows. And so I fabricated cases using fun printed flannel (1/2 one thousand for each). I added a handy velcro pocket on the front and then each child could keep a few books handy.

For only a few dollars and about thirty minutes each, my kids had handy travel pillows just big enough to go on them comfortable, but small enough to be convenient on the long ride.

Here'south how: I started past cutting an old pillow into quarters. It turned out to be easier to cutting through the pillow's fabric commencement, then to tear the filling autonomously rather than endeavor to cut through it.

A pillow that\'s been cut into pieces

I removed plenty filling so that I could shut up the two open sides on each travel pillow. I pinned well, then serged the sides closed. If you lot don't take a serger, y'all could just stitch a straight stitch – merely I'd recommend using a small run up length to brand certain it's secure.

Four mini pillows, all set up to get. If you only demand one or two travel pillows, proceed one half of the pillow intact and run up up the side – then stuff it into a sideslip encompass for a throw pillow.

For small travel pillows

For each case, you'll need 1/two yard of fabric and about seven inches inches of sew on velcro. I used flannel fabrics because they come up in such a fun diversity of prints, only a plain old cotton fiber would piece of work but every bit well. Wash your fabric kickoff, because it will likely shrink. So cutting out the pieces as shown beneath:

Don't worry if your cloth has shrunk a little more than mine did and your two principal pieces tin't be quite xviii inches tall – 17 would certainly work fine.

I started past pressing my handle pieces in one-half longways, wrong sides together, and serging down i side to finish the raw edges. If you don't take a serger, fold the handle pieces in half right sides together and sew with a narrow seam allowance, then turn right side out and press.

long strips of fabric that have been folded over and sewn together on long edge

Side by side I serged all the style around the pocket slice to finish the edges. If yous don't take a serger and your fabric frays (almost cottons will), pink or zig zag around all raw edges.

Fold the top of the pocket piece downwards about 2 inches, press, and sew together straight beyond to make a clean elevation hem for the pocket. Center 1 one-half of your velcro on that acme hem, pivot, and run up on (I sewed a rectangle all the style around the velcro, very shut to the edge).

Place pocket on front piece equally shown below and marking where the other half of the velcro should go along the forepart piece. Run up to attach velcro to front piece.

Now y'all can printing the iii raw edges of the pocket under most 1/four-1/2 inch. Place the pocket on the front piece, matching upwards velcro, and pin in place. Sew along dotted lines shown below to secure pocket to front piece.

Lay the forepart slice on the back piece, correct sides together, and sew together along sides and bottom, leaving the meridian open up, to make a pillow instance.

Fold the height of the pillow instance downwardly about an inch and a half and pivot. Make certain the office you've folded downward doesn't overlap the top of the pocket. Pin handles on the case as shown, tucking raw edges of handles inside the part that's been folded downwards.

Run up all the manner around the superlative, about i/four inch from raw border of the folded downwardly portion. Sew all the mode around the tiptop again, this fourth dimension about 1/4 inch from the very tiptop to secure handles.
